REFLECTIONS

Experience

I would say my experience with Typography has come with some ups and downs as I was doing something I was not entirely used to. But it was a nice experience nonetheless seeing how type is used in design. As creative media design is not my major I felt I did not have a lot of experience on certain aspects of design but with the exercises and projects we were given I felt like I could start to see things from a designer's perspective. As of now I am not sure exactly how I will apply this knowledge in my future prospects but I am sure that I will be looking at type designs with a slightly keener eye than I did before this semester.

Observations

In the typographic exploration and communication task I was able to observe what type designers go through in order to make easily readable bodies of texts that are pleasing to the eyes. I can recall in the past where I would not read some articles as they were not nice to look at and I would unconsciously skip over them. Back then I did not know terms like kerning or leading and just thought "well this doesn't look nice" but now I could confidently tell you why exactly I would not find it nice with the knowledge I have gained.

Findings

When designing, especially when creating our own fonts, I initially believed we only needed to focus on making letterforms look beautiful and exciting. However, it turns out that we also need to prioritise things like readability and consistency, so I continued to work on my font while adhering to the traditional methods other fonts were created. Though it continued to look more and more different from my original sketches, it also began to resemble a typeface since the strokes and letter stress were more consistent.
